Use arrow keys to move, ENTER key to go in, ESC key to back out, just as if it was a quarter of a century ago. You don't have a mouse pointer, just a text cursor, which you will be using for moving around. On this Acer laptop, the BIOS is called "InsydeH20 Setup Utility" and it's a classic text-based BIOS (appears little changed from the early 1990's). It was all within the BIOS, accessible by repeatedly hitting F2 at the black screen (just before the Acer screen, as the laptop is rebooting). It was not necessary to disable Secure Boot, it seems to work just fine with Secure Boot still enabled. Yay, after combining some ideas from other forum posts, I got it to work! I can now successfully boot it into Linux.

I think that the install process is smart enough to figure out to use EFI if the disk is GPT.

Once that was done, the install went flawlessly, and on restart I had a grub menu giving me the option of Windows or LInux.īTW I just chose the device (sda) not the EFI partition as the location of the boot manager. I had to change my entry from Windows to Other OS (and save the changes) to get my linux DVD to boot in UEFI mode.

There are two choices: Windows and Other OS. My mobo also has an entry for 'Secure Boot' on the UEFI/BIOS screen. (You can do this without re doing the install)Ĥ. I see an EFI label "ubuntu" but when I select it, nothing happens, it again just ignores me and boots into Windows 10. I used the shift-Restart trick and this was able to let me get into the temporary troubleshooting menu.

I can't find a choice anywhere in Windows. The EFI System Partition is also known as "Windows Boot Manager". Tried to use the "grub-install" command manually, but it doesn't understand EFI, so it errored out. There is no menu, or anything, to choose Linux.Īlso tried selecting the whole disk device (not the EFI System Partition) for the bootloader, this didn't make a difference. The installation completed without error, however, when I went to reboot, all that could boot up was Windows 10. I installed into that new ext4 partition, and for the bootloader location, I selected the EFI System Partition. I used "gparted" to shrink the NTFS partition, making room for Linux.

I also tried a USB stick instead of a DVD, it didn't make a difference. Repeatedly hitting "F2" enters the BIOS, and the choice can be made there as well. Repeatedly hitting "F12" while on the Acer screen brings up a boot menu. It came preinstalled with Windows 10 Home, which I'd like to keep, and dual boot.īooting with Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon on DVD worked. I have an Acer laptop, Nitro 5, model AN515-51-78C6. I've used Linux for many years, but this stumps me.
